In 1875, Joseph Bulova, a 23 year old immigrant
from Bohemia, opened a small jewelry shop on Maiden Lane in New York City.
In 1912, Bulova set up its first plant dedicated to the production of watch
components and their assembly into jeweled movements in Bienne, Switzerland.
After World War I, due to the convenience of wristwatches as compared to pocket
watches, Bulova Watch introduced the first full line of men's jeweled
wristwatches. In 1923, the name Bulova Watch Company, Inc. was adopted. In 1954,
Bulova introduced Bulova 23, a self-winding, water resistant, 23-jewel watch
with an unbreakable mainspring, made entirely in the United States. In 1960,
Bulova introduced Accutron. In 1979, Bulova became a subsidiary of Loews
Corporation. In 2001, Bulova acquired Wittnauer. Today, Bulova Watch is part of
Citizen Watch. Although the ownership of Bulova has changed hands a few times,
one thing remains, Bulova Watch continues to be an American brand that
emphasizes style, quality and value in each of its timepieces.
