Mondaine Watches

The story began in 1944 when NHanHans Hilfiker, a Federal Swiss Railways employee, designer, and engineer, designed a clean, easy-to-read clock to be used across all of the Swiss railway systems. Fast forward 42 years to 1986 when the Bernheim family – owners of Mondaine watches became intrigued with the blueprints of the official Swiss Railways clock. They acquired a license from the Federal Swiss Railways and turned the clock into a Swiss watch collection with cheap pricing. 2 years later, Mondaine introduced a women’s collection on sale featuring this iconic look. Mondaine then branched into other accessories, most notably desk clocks. Moving into the 21st century, Mondaine changed its headquarters twice and have been featured in two books dealing with amazing watches. In 2004, a Mondaine watch was featured on a Swiss stamp. 2005 saw the inclusion of a self-illuminating system on the hour markers and the hands of each Mondaine timepiece. Between 2012 and 2015 saw 4 more revolutionary concepts being added to Mondaine’s repertoire. These were the Vintage Handwider in 2012, the Stop2Go in 2013, the Helvetica No.1 in 2014, and the Helvetica No.1 Smart Watch in 2015. Though each of these watches represent a different aspect of contemporary watchmaking, it is undeniable that the minimalist spirit of Mondaine stands strong.
